How the mixing works

Each layer is its own generator with its own level and its own muffle control. Muffle is a low-pass filter: turn it up and that layer loses its high frequencies, the way a sound loses them through a wall. The master slider moves the whole mix at once, so you can set the balance first and the volume after.

What the layers are

Six noise colors, from bright white down to deep brown, plus two beds from the fan family: a bright fan and a deep hum. All of them are generated in your browser as they play, so a five layer mix downloads nothing and works with the connection off.

Four presets ship with the tool. Mixes you save stay in this browser and never leave it. The share link holds the mix itself, written into the address, so sharing needs no account and no server.

Frequently asked questions

How many sounds can I layer?

Five. Past that the layers stop reading as separate sounds and start reading as one loud one, and the device generating them works harder for no gain.

Where are my saved mixes kept?

In this browser, in local storage. Nothing is uploaded, so a mix saved here is not on your phone as well, and clearing site data removes it. The share link is the way to move a mix between devices.

Do the share links expire?

No. The link holds the mix itself rather than an id on a server, so it keeps working as long as this page exists. Bookmark it or paste it into a message.

Why is there no rain or cafe layer?

Because they are not built yet. Every sound here is generated from scratch rather than played from a recording, and rain and voices are hard to generate convincingly. The mixer offers the sounds that hold up.
